Our program on DOT Cargo Securement discusses the goals of the DOT’s Cargo Securement Standard, the requirements that the Standard places on motor carriers and drivers, and what drivers should do to ensure that the cargo on the truck they are driving stays put when they’re on the road. There are any number of things that can cause an accident on the highways. In studying incidents that involve commercial vehicles, the Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) determined that cargo being loaded and secured incorrectly is more likely to cause a crash than any other type of problem. So the DOT has established "cargo securement" regulations to specify how different types of cargo should be loaded and secured so that it can be transported safely. Areas included in the program include the DOT Cargo Securement Standard, securement systems, working with “load limits”, loading and restraining cargo and more.

This course presents fundamental information for employees on the DOT’s Cargo Securement Standard, and how to safely secure cargo on a truck. Upon completing the course, employees should:
- Understand the hazards an incorrectly secured load can present to them and other vehicles on the road.
- Recognize that accidents involving improperly secured loads are common and preventable.
- Know what they can do to ensure that the cargo on the truck that they’re driving will remain safely secured.

FMCSA Regulations and Interpretations - 49 CFR Parts 300-399, 49 CFR 390.5
